On Monday, two scientists were awarded the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine for discovering microRNAs, which are tiny bits of genetic information that act as on and off switches inside cells, allowing them to govern what and when they do. If scientists can better understand how they work and modify them, they may one day lead to effective treatments for disorders like as cancer.
