A stampede broke out at the Mahakumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, during the early hours of January 29, 2025, resulting in multiple injuries and feared deaths. The incident occurred at the Sangam, where thousands had gathered for a holy dip in the Ganga river on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya .According to eyewitnesses, the stampede was triggered when a barrier broke, causing a surge in the dense crowd. Several people, including women and children, suffered injuries, and some were rushed to the hospital .The official number of casualties has not been confirmed, but reports suggest that at least 15 people may have lost their lives in the stampede ┬│. The administration has struggled to manage the overwhelming crowd, with around 10 crore pilgrims expected to gather at the Sangam Ghats on Mauni Amavasya ┬▓.In response to the incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, reviewing the situation and calling for immediate support measures . The Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad has also announced that seers will not participate in the Mauni Amavasya ‘Amrit Snan’ due to the situation .
